Marriage Dosha and Puthra Dosha

We know that 2nd, 4th, 5th, 7th, 8th and 12th houses are associated with Marriage. The 2nd house signifies Family, 4th house signifies comfortability, 5th house signifies children (Puthra), 7th house signifies life partner or spouse, 8th house signifies lifespan of spouse and 12th house signifies bed pleasure.

If any of these houses, house Lords are afflicted by placement or aspect of

1. Malefic Planets such as Saturn, Mars, Sun, Rahu/Ketu or
2. Malefic house Lords such as Ashtamathipathi, Badhakathipathi, Marakathipathi or
3. Inimical Planets in conjunction like Sun & Venus, Sun & Saturn, Mars & Venus or
4. If the Lord of any of these houses is debilitated or Combust

then it forms Marriage dosha.

If 5th house and its Lord are afflicted, it forms Putra dosha. If 5th house Lord is debilitated and associated with Malefics planets or Malefic house Lords by conjunction or aspect, it causes Puthra Shoka (पुत्र शोक).

Effect of Marriage Dosha : Marriage dosha in a horoscope is the primary cause of Late marriage, Problems in married life, Separation, Divorce, 2nd marriage and Loss of spouse. Marriage dosha can be broadly classified as Kalathra dosha, Naga dosha and Manglik dosha.

Effect of Puthra Dosha & Puthra Shoka : Puthra dosha is the primary cause of Late child birth and Puthra Shoka causes sufferings to parents by their child.

Let us discuss them in details, one by one.

1. Kalathra Dosha : A horoscope is said to have Kalathra dosha if

1. Venus or Venus and Mars in conjunction are placed in 7th house
2. Malefics such as Mars, Saturn, Sun, Rahu are placed in 7th house
3. Badhakathipathi and/or Marakathipathi are placed in 7th house
4. 7th house Lord is combust or debilitated or placed in 6th, 8th or 12th house
5. 7th house Lord is associated with 6th, 8th or 12th house Lord
6. 6th house Lord and /or 8th house Lord are placed in 7th house
7. 2nd house Lord is placed in 6th, 8th or 12th house in conjunction with Malefics
8. Retrograde planet is posited in 2nd house or aspects 2nd house Lord 2nd house Lord is debilitated
9. Sun, Saturn, Mars, Rahu/Ketu are placed in 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house
10. 2nd and 7th house Lords in conjunction with Venus are placed in malefic houses
11. Sun and Venus in conjunction are placed in 2nd, 5th, 7th or 9th house
12. Venus or 7th house Lord is placed in Virgo Sign
13. Moon is placed either in Capricorn or Aquarius. Saturn is placed in Cancer
14. Moon and Saturn are in conjunction or aspect mutually
15. Mars and Saturn are in conjunction or aspect mutually
16. Malefics are placed on either side of 7th house or its Lord or Venus

While examining Kalathra Dosha, all the houses should be considered not only from Ascendant, but also from Venus and Moon because all the three planets play an important role in marriage.

The chart below shows Kalathra Dosha. In this horoscope,

1) The 2nd house Lord is responsible for family expansion and 7th house Lord is responsible for marriage. Here, the 2nd and 7th house Lord Venus is debilitated and placed in the 6th house as well.

2) Sun, Mercury and Mars aspect 2nd house. Sun is Malefic. Mercury is the 3rd and 6th house Lord which is functionally Malefic. Mars is the 8th house Lord and Malefic. With stressed aspect of multiple Malefics, the 2nd house is completely afflicted

3) "Karako Bhava Nasthi". 5th house signifies children and Jupiter's is significator of children (Puthra Karkakan). So, with Jupiter in the 5th house, the 5th house is afflicted, and the child birth is delayed.

4) The 4th house Lord Moon is in conjunct with Ketu, Moon gets the aspect of Mars and 4th house gets the aspect of Saturn

5) 12th house gets the aspect of Saturn and debilitated Venus which afflicts 12th house

6) 7th house from Moon (Sagittarius) is afflicted with the placement of Rahu and 7th house from Venus (Pisces) is also afflicted as Saturn and debilitated Venus aspects

The Betrothal function of the native was crashed in 2017. With 2nd, 4th, 5th, 7th and 12th house from Ascendant, and also 7th house from Moon and Venus are afflicted, the native got married at the age of 30.

2. Naga or Sarpa Dosha - A horoscope is said to have Naga or Sarpa dosha, if Rahu / Ketu is placed in 1st / 7th house.

We know that Rahu causes obstacles and Ketu causes detachment. Hence, if Ketu is placed in 7th house, it will cause detachment with Marriage or Married life. On the other hand, if Rahu is placed in 7th house, then it will cause hurdles in marriage and / or problems in married life.

Rahu is arch rival to Moon and Sun. Therefore, marriage in Rahu Dasa when Rahu is in Cancer (Karkara / Kadaka ) Lagna or in Leo (Simha) Lagna will cause obstacles to marriage or even go so far as to crash / break the marriage.

Placement of Rahu in 7th house is one of the indicators of "Intercaste Marriage" as well as "Extra marital relationship". However, horoscope must be examined holistically to find out intercaste marriage or Extra marital relationship.

Note - Naga Dosha is different from Kala Sarpa Dosha. Placement of Rahu/Ketu in 1st / 7th house forms Naga Dosha. Confinement of all planets with Rahu/Ketu forms Kala Sarpa Dosha. The effect of Naga or Sarpa Dosha is different from Kala Sarpa Dosha.

3. Manglik Dosha : A horoscope is said to have Manglik dosha if Mars is placed in 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house.

Manglik dosha is also known as Mangal dosha or Kuja dosha and in Tamil as Sevvai dosham. Placement of Mars in the 8th house in a Girl's horoscope is known as Mangalya Dosham in Tamil.

Some houses are exempted from Manglik Dosha.

1. Aries and Scorpio because Mars rules these houses
2. Sagittarius and Pisces because Mars gets transformed into benefic in Jupiter's house
3. Cancer and Leo because Mars is the Lucky Planet (Yogakaraka / Yogi) for Cancer and Leo
4. Capricorn and Aquarius because Saturn being Malefic and inimical to Mars, it will fight back the evil effect of Mars

But, there are different school of thoughts on the exemption. Some says only point 1 and 2 above are exempted, some says all the four points are valid.

When Mars is posited in 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house from Ascendant and if that house is Taurus, Gemini, Virgo or Libra then Manglik dosha will be strong. But, in my experience, I have noticed that regardless of the house, if Mars is posited in 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th or 12th house, it will trigger Manglik dosha.

Effect of Manglik dosha :

Manglik dosha can temporarily separate the couple or lead to divorce during the Dasha/Bhukthi period of Mars and when the aspect of Transit Saturn falls on Mars.

The Manglik Dosha, formed by placement of Mars in 8th house, can cause sudden death of spouse because 8th house signifies lifespan of spouse.

Divorce : The chart below shows Manglik Dosha with Mars posited in the 4th house. The native is a divorcee. With 5th house afflicted, native does not have any kids as well. With 11th house afflicted, the native will not get second marriage as well, even though debilitated Jupiter aspects 11th house.

Loss of spouse : The horoscope of a native whose spouse died of cancer is shown below.

For Taurus ascendant (Rishaba Lagna), Jupiter is a functional malefic because it is 8th house Lord (Ashtamathipathi) and 11th house Lord too. So, Jupiter will afflict not only the house it is posited but the house and planet it aspects.

In this horoscope, Ashtamathipathi Jupiter is posited in the 2nd house which signifies family. Jupiter aspects the 8th house occupied by Mars, Saturn and Ascendant Venus. And, Saturn & Mars aspect Jupiter.

With 2nd house afflicted by Jupiter and 8th house afflicted by Saturn & Mars and 8th house Lord Jupiter is afflicted by the aspect of Saturn & Mars, native's spouse died in 2018, during Jupiter Dasha, Venus Bhukthi.

4. Puthra dosha : A horoscope is said to have Puthra Dosha if the 2nd and 5th houses and their lords and Jupiter are afflicted by malefic planets or malefic house Lords such as Ashtamathipathi, Badhakathipathi and Marakathipathi.

We know that 2nd house signifies family and 5th house signifies children / progeny.

If the 2nd house and / or its Lord is afflicted by malefic planets like Rahu, Saturn, Mars, Sun, childbearing will be delayed, thus delaying family expansion.

If the 5th house and / or its Lord is afflicted by malefic planets or Lords of malefic houses (Dusthanathipathi), child birth will be delayed.

Also, if Jupiter, the significator of Child (Puthra Karaka) is debilitated in a horoscope, it will delay the child birth.

"Karako Bhava Nasthi". If a planet, responsible for an action (Karaka), is posited in a house (Bhava) having the same responsibility, that house (Bhava) will be afflicted (Nasthi). As a result, the action will be either delayed or cancelled.

We know that 5th house from Lagna and Jupiter (Puthra Karaka) are responsible for giving children to the native. So, if Jupiter is posited in the 5th house, the 5th house gets afflicted, and the child birth will be delayed or there will be no child at all.

Sometimes the marriage will be delayed and the child will be born within a year. The native will get married at the age of 32 and will have a child at the age of 33.

Below is the horoscope of a person who had a baby boy in 2019 after 12 years of marriage in 2007.

For Gemini ascendant (Mithuna Lagna), Jupiter is a functional malefic because it is the Badhakathipathi and Marakathipathi. So, Jupiter will afflict the house it is posited. Also the house and planet it aspects will be afflicted.

In this horoscope, Jupiter is exalted and posited in the 2nd house which signifies family. Also, its aspect falls on the 2nd house Lord Moon. Thus, the 2nd house Cancer and its Lord Moon are afflicted by Badhakathipathi & Marakathipathi Jupiter.

Also, the 5th house Lord Venus is conjunct the inimical planet Sun and also Saturn aspects the 5th house.

As both the 2nd and 5th houses and their lords are afflicted, child birth was delayed by almost 12 years.

5. Puthra Shoka (पुत्र शोक) - It means sufferings caused to parents by their child.

We know that 5th house from Lagna signifies children.

A horoscope is said to have Puthra Shoka, if the 5th house Lord (Puthra Sthanathipathi) is debilitated or afflicted by malefic planets or malefic house Lords such as Dusthanathipathi, Ashtamathipathi, Badhakathipathi and Marakathipathi.

If the 5th house Lord is debilitated or afflicted by malefic planets, then there will be loss of child. This indicates that the native has to suffer from child loss as per Karma.

Child loss can be in the form of miscarriage or abortion or stillbirth. The child may die at any stage or age.

In some cases, the baby is born with certain disabilities such as Down syndrome, Heart disease, Deafness or Suffering from polio.

Basically, Putra Shoka affects the parents in one way or the other because of their children.

Below is the horoscope of a person who lost a daughter when the child was 4 years old.

For Taurus ascendant (Rishaba Lagna), Jupiter is a functional malefic because it is 8th house Lord (Ashtamathipathi) and 11th house Lord too. So, Jupiter will afflict not only the house it is posited but the house and planet it aspects.

In this horoscope, Jupiter is Ashtamathipathi and Mercury is the Lord of 2nd and 5th house which signifies Family and Child respectively. Here

1. Mercury is debilitated,
2. Mercury is afflicted by the conjunction of Mars and Sun,
3. Mercury is afflicted by the aspect of exalted Jupiter (Malefic),
4. 5th house is afflicted by the aspect of Mars and Sun,
5. 2nd house is afflicted by the aspect of Mars
6. The native has Kala Sarpa Dosha

With 5th & 2nd house and its Lord Mercury is afflicted and Mercury is debilitated too, the native lost the child in 2012 during Mars Dasa, Jupiter Bhukthi.
