Yoga or Luck

Yoga : In Sanskrit "Yoga" means "Addition", "Union", "Lucky Conjuncture". A person born with good Yoga in the horoscope is a "lucky person" who gets many things without difficulty. So, contextually we can say, Yoga means Luck.

Yogas are formed when a Planet associates with another Planet by placement, aspect or conjunction. While the Shubha Yoga (luck) gives sudden rise to the native, the Ashuba Yoga (bad luck) brings poverty and misery to one's life.

The result of the Yoga will be pronounced during the Planetary periods (Dasha or Bhukthi period) of the planets involved.

Also, the result pronounced will be more prominent when one of the planets involved is strong in Natal chart (Rasi Chart) or Navamsam or in D-10 divisional charts. Conjunction of Rahu/Ketu with the planets involved will reduce the effect.

So, it is better to evaluate the strength of the planets in the Natal and other charts before forecasting the result of the Yoga.

Note : Marriage Yoga which helps in timely marriage and Marriage Dosha which causes problems in married life are discussed seperately under the heading Marriage.

Types of Yoga : There are thousands of Yogas. The Great Parashara Rishi in his Horasastra classifies the Yogas as Nabhasa Yoga, Lunar Yoga, Solar Yoga, Raja Yoga, Yoga for Royal Association and Yoga for Wealth. The Sage also mentions that there are 32 subdivisions (द्वात्रिंशात् प्रभेद) in Nabhasa Yogas which have a total of 1800 varieties. This Nabhasa Yoga consists of 3 Asraya Yogas, 2 Dala Yogas, 20 Akriti Yogas and 7 Sankhya Yoga.

Out of thousands of yogas, not all of them give good results to one. A malefic yoga like Daritra Yoga brings hardship and poverty in one's life while the result of auspicious yoga like Raja Yoga or Kingly Yoga will be good.

In any horoscopes there will be a minimum of 50 Yogas. Some of the prominent Shubha and Ashubha Yogas which produce very good / bad effect on the native are discussed below.
  • Pancha Maha Purusha Yoga
  • Neecha Bhanga Raja Yoga
  • Dharma Karmathipathi Yoga
  • Parivarthana Yoga
  • Chandra Mangala Yoga
  • Adhi Yoga
  • Gaja Kesari Yoga
  • Kemadruma Yoga
  • Guru Chandala Yoga
  • Papa Karthari Yoga
  • 1. Pancha Maha Purusha Yoga

Parashara Rishi states that when Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn are being in their own sign or in their sign of exaltation, and be in quadrant to Ascendant, they give rise to Ruchaka, Bhadra, Hamsa, Malavya and Sasa Yogas respectively. These Yogas are called Pancha Maha Purusha Yogas and the person born in these Yogas are known as Pancha Maha Purushas (5 types of great personalities).

Jathaka Parijathah, another classic text ranked alongside of Brhat Parashara Horasastra, states about Pancha Maha Purusha Yoga as

"Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn possessing the greatest strength and occupying a quadrant, is in Moolatrikona or in own sign or exalted, the resulting Yogas will be Ruchaka, Bhadra, Hamsa, Malavya and Sasa respectively"

Though it is not mentioned explicitly, it is imperative that the Ascendant and Planet forming Yoga are not afflicted. Also, the Yoga is formed when planets are Quadrant to Moon as well.

Effect of Pancha Maha Purusha Yogas

    1. Ruchaka Yoga : Formed when Mars is placed in Aries or in Scorpio or in Capricorn and Quadrant to Ascendant or Moon. A person born with Ruchaka Yoga will have good and strong physique, attractive face, energetic, enthusiastic, courageous and bold. This Yoga gives rise to the native in Sports or Uniformed Services.
    2. Bhadra Yoga : Formed when Mercury is placed in Gemini or in Virgo and Quadrant to Ascendant or Moon. A person born with Bhadra Yoga will be very well educated, intelligent, intellectual, learned, praised by learned, very strategic and diplomatic in communication. This Yoga gives rise to the native to a very high position in career with name and fame and blesses them with wealth.
    3. Hamsa Yoga : Formed when Jupiter is placed in Sagittarius or in Pisces or in Cancer and Quadrant to Ascendant or Moon. A person born with Hamsa Yoga will be wise, knowledgeable, high political or government dignitary.
    4. Malavya Yoga : Formed when Venus is placed in Taurus or in Libra or in Pisces and Quadrant to Ascendant or Moon. A person born with Malavya Yoga will have a good spouse, live a luxury life.

    2. Neecha Bhanga Raja Yoga

We already stated that a planet gets debilitated in certain house and becomes weak. But, under certain circumstances, the Debilitation of the Planet gets cancelled giving rise to "Neechabhanga Raja Yoga" which bestows best result upon the native.

Dispositor : The dispositor is a planet in whose sign another planet is placed. For instance, when Venus is posited in Virgo, then Mercury is called "Dispositor".

The circumstances which gives rise to Neechabhanga Raja Yoga are explained below:

    1. The dispositor of the debilitated planet is in its own sign or exalted
    2. The dispositor and debilitated planet are in mutual exchange
    3. The dispositor and another planet are in mutual exchange
    4. The debilitated planet is in conjunction with Exalted planet
    5. The debilitated planet is in Quadrant to Ascendant or Moon
    6. Two debilitated planets aspect each other mutually
    7. The debilitated planet is in retrograde
    8. The debilitated planet is in the same sign in Navamsam (Vargothamam)
    9. The debilitated planet is exalted in Navamsam

Let us explain it with an example. Say Saturn is posited in Aries. Saturn gets debilitated in Aries. Mars is the dispositor. We know, Sun exalts in Aries and debilitates in Libra. With debilitated Saturn, Neechabhanga Raja Yoga will be formed when

    1. Mars is posited in Aries, Scorpio or Capricorn (Dispositor in own sign or exalted)
    2. Mars is placed in Capricorn or in Aquarius (Dispositor & Saturn in Parivarthan)
    3. Mars and Venus are in Parivarthan (Dispositor is in Parivarthan with another planet)
    4. Sun is placed in Aries (Debilitated planet is in conjunction with Exalted planet)
    5. The Ascendant / Moon is placed in Cancer, Libra or Capricorn (Quadrant)
    6. Sun is placed in Libra (Two debilitated planets aspect mutually)
    7. Saturn is in retrograde (Debilitated planet is in Retrograde)
    8. Saturn is posited in Aries in Navamsam too (Debilitated planet in Vargothamam)
    9. Saturn is in Libra in Navamsam (Debilitated planet is exalted in Navamsam)

When two or more conditions are satisfied, it gives a very good result upon the person during the Dasha period or Bhukthi period of the planets involved.

The result pronounced by the Neechabhanga Raja Yoga generally will be good wealth, prosperity and popularity. However, the significances of the debilitated Planet and the house it posits will be pronounced more effectively as a result of this Yoga.

Example : Ascendant is Cancer, Saturn is debilitated in Aries and Mars is exalted in Capricorn. Aries, the 10th house, is the house of profession and pride for Cancer Ascendant. In this case, 1) the dispositor is exalted 2) the dispositor and the debilitated planet are in Parivarthan 3) the exalted dispositor aspects the debilitated planet 4) the debilitated planet too aspects the dispositor. The person born with this horoscope will be bestowed with very good job, fast growth in career, best servants and a great deal of pride in accomplishments.

Note : When a debilitated planet is placed in 7th house to Moon, and the Moon is placed between 4th and 10th house to the Sun (either Full Moon or close to Full Moon), then the debilitation of the planet gets cancelled. But, this is only cancelation of debilitation and does not form Neechabhanga Raja Yoga.

    3. Dharma Karmathipathi Yoga

This Yoga is formed when 9th house Lord and 10th house Lord are associated either by conjunction, mutual aspect or exchange of houses.

For instance, consider Aquarius Ascendant. Placement of Mars in Taurus and Venus in Scorpio will form Dharma Karmathipathi Yoga because 1) Libra is the 9th house and Scorpio is the 10th house 2) Venus and Mars are 9th and 10th house Lords respectively 3) Mars is placed in Venus house Taurus and Venus is placed in Mars house Scorpio and 4) Mars and Venus aspect each other mutually.

9th house represents Dharma (righteousness) and 10th house represents Karma (action or what one does for living). This Yoga will give a very good career growth, status and makes the person wealthy, legitimately.

This Yoga also gives rise to Power and position, and it is seen in some politicians' horoscope. But, this does not mean that every one born with this Yoga will be a political leader.

    4. Parivarthana Yoga

Parivarthan in Sanskrit means Exchange. Parivarthana Yoga is formed when two House Lords exchange their houses Mutually. This Yoga may be formed in three ways when

    1. Two Auspicious House Lords exchange their houses
    2. One Auspicious House Lord and one inauspicious House Lord exchange their houses
    3. Two inauspicious House Lords exchange their houses

Maha Parivarthana Raja Yoga : This Auspicious Yoga is formed when Auspicious House Lords of 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, 7th, 9th, 10th and 11th exchange their houses mutually.

For instance, consider Aries Ascendant. Maha Parivarthana Yoga is formed when Mars is placed in Taurus and Venus is placed Aries (exchange of 1st and 2nd House Lords).

As a result of the Maha Parivarthana Yoga, the significances of the Planets and Houses involved will be pronounced more effectively. 2nd house will give rise to Financial status, 9th house will give rise to Political power, 10th house will give rise in Career and so on.

The exchange between 2nd house and 7th house can be considered as less auspicious because both the houses represent Killer or Maraka houses, they are auspicious houses though.

Kahala Yoga : This Yoga is formed when 3rd House Lord exchange its house with one of the Auspicious House Lords of 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, 7th, 9th, 10th or 11th.

For instance, consider Aries Ascendant. Kahala Yoga is formed when Venus is placed in Gemini and Mercury is placed Taurus (exchange of 2nd and 3rd House Lords).

The second house signifies wealth and prosperity. The 3rd house represents self-confidence and hard work. A person born with this Yoga will have to struggle before prospering. The result will be pronounced effectively after lot of hard-work. In short, when an auspicious house exchanges its house with the 3rd house, then the native will have to work very hard to achieve the auspicious benefit of that house.

Dainya Yoga : This Yoga is formed when one of the Evil house or Dusthana 6th, 8th or 12th House Lord exchange its house with one of the Auspicious House Lords of 1st, 2nd, 4th, 5th, 7th, 9th, 10th or 11th, including 3rd House Lord.

For instance, consider Aries Ascendant. Dainya Yoga is formed when Mercury is placed in Sagittarius and Jupiter is placed Virgo (exchange of 6th and 9th House Lords).

This is not an auspicious Yoga. The Evil House Lord placed in the Auspicious house will afflict the significances of the house and the Auspicious House Lord placed in the Evil house will lose its dignity and become weak. Hence, the life of the person born with this Yoga will be miserable and will be driven by poverty.

Vipreet Raja Yoga : This Yoga is formed when exchange of house takes place between Two Evil or Dusthana House Lords viz., 6th, 8th or 12th.

For instance, consider Aries Ascendant. Vipreet Raja Yoga is formed when Mercury is placed in Scorpio and Mars is placed Virgo (exchange of 6th and 8th House Lords).

This Yoga gives good results such as good health, favorable judgement in long pending case, wealth, huge profit, power and position etc., The result will be pronounced all of a sudden and out of the blue.

    5. Chandra-Mangala Yoga

Chandra Mangala Yoga is formed when Mangal (Mars) is in Quadrant to Chandra (Moon) i.e., Mars is placed 1st, 4th, 7th or 10th house to Moon. A person born with Chandra-Mangala Yoga in the horoscope will be bestowed with very good wealth, only when both the planets are not afflicted.

Hence, the strength of Moon and Mars and other planetary conditions must be evaluated before forecasting the result of the Yoga.

Mars aspect, in general, will be a stressed aspect. It will not do good. And, if Moon is also afflicted, then the Yoga will produce a very bad result.

In the Horoscope shown below, Mars is posited in 7th house to Moon. Mars is debilitated but debilitation is cancelled because it is placed in 7th house to Moon and Moon is also placed within Quadrant to Sun. But, Moon is afflicted because it is posited in 6th House and gets the aspect of Sat and Mars too. With afflicted Manokarak Moon, the Native was "Mentally retarded" by Birth. Ashtamathipathi Jupiter and 6th house Lord Saturn aspect Ascendant. The native died on 21.08.19. So, it is obvious that afflicted Moon & Mars does not pronounce good Chandra-Mangala yoga result.
    Moon-Mars Luck Sample 1

In the Horoscope shown below, Moon and debilitated Mars are in conjunction. But, Moon is almost two days short of Amavasya which means Moon is almost Malefic. Mars is already debilitated. The Native is not much bestowed with the Chandra-Mangala Yoga because both the planets are not strong.

    Moon-Mars Luck Sample 2

Guru-Mangala Yoga is formed when Mars is in Quadrant to Jupiter. The native born with this Yoga will have very good properties and wealth right from birth.

Bhirugu-Mangala Yoga is formed when Mars is in Quadrant to Venus. The native born with this Yoga will be bestowed with good properties and wealth through the spouse.

    6. Adhi Yoga

Adi Yoga is formed when benefics planets like Mercury, Jupiter and Venus are placed in 6th, 7th or 8th to Moon houses alone or together. Since this yoga is based on the moon, it is also known as Chandradhi yoga.

It is important that the moon is full moon or close to full moon day. We know that Rahu will combust the Sun and Ketu will eclipse the Moon. Hence, Rahu should not be in the twelfth or second house to the Sun or in conjunction with the Sun. If so, the Sun will be combust by Rahu and will lose its light. As a result, the Moon will not get light from the Sun and this yoga will not be formed.

Since this Yoga is formed by 6, 7 and 8th houses to the Moon, the general benefit of this Yoga will be, free from debt and diseases, overcoming enemies (significance of 6th house), good marital life (7th house) and good longevity (8th house), and Wealth, Power and Status.

When benefics like Mercury, Jupiter and Venus become auspicious through Chandradhi yoga, they pronounce their significances more prominently upon the native viz., intelligence, good education, high position in profession, wealth, luxurious life, etc.

The result produced will be either delayed or will be negative (for instance wealth will come through sinful deeds) in case malefic like Saturn or Mars are involved in this Yoga.

Below is the horoscope with Chandradhi Yoga. The person born with this horoscope is well educated. He did his post graduation in abroad and he is working there. He is drawing an annual salary of more than 100,000 GBP. The important thing to note in this horoscope is that Rahu is in conjunct with the Sun and but with the Moon only. So, Sun is able to shed light on the Moon as it is not eclipsed and the native was bestowed with good result as the Chandradhi Yoga is powerful. This yoga would not have formed, if Rahu was in conjunct with the Sun.

This Yoga gets cancelled when Jupiter aspects Moon or when there are any planets in Quadrant to Moon (1, 4, 7, 10).

This Yoga will devoid wealth and knowledge and the person born with this Yoga will be an idiot, illiterate and poor.
